Looking for an ionCube alternative? What to compare

ionCube is the best-known PHP encoder, but not the only one. Here's what to compare when choosing an alternative — pricing model, PHP versions, licensing, loaders — and how Oxrion fits.

By Oxrion · 4 min read

ionCube has protected PHP code for a long time, and for many projects it’s still a sound choice. But developers look for alternatives for good reasons: a different pricing model, licensing that’s easier to run day to day, or a workflow that suits how they ship software.

This guide covers what to compare, so you can decide on facts rather than habit. Details about ionCube come from its own PHP Encoder and editions pages, checked in October 2026 — vendors change their offers, so confirm anything that matters to you on their site.

1. How you pay

ionCube’s PHP Encoder is sold as a purchase, from $249, with “no mandatory renewals”. Its licensing controls (domain, IP and time restrictions) are in the Pro and Cerberus editions, and Online Licensing is an optional add-on for those editions.

A one-time purchase suits teams that encode often and want a fixed cost. A subscription with a free tier suits developers who want to start small, protect a few releases a month, or try protection on real code before paying.

Ask: what will this cost me in the first year, and what do I need to buy to get licensing?

2. Where your code is encoded

ionCube’s encoder runs on your own machine (Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD), and ionCube also offers an online encoder. Oxrion encodes on its encoder service: the free desktop app sends only the PHP files you select, they’re protected in memory and returned, and no copy is kept.

Ask: may my code leave my machine at all? If your policy says no, you need a local encoder. If it may, a service means there’s no encoder installed on your machine to license, update or keep secure.

3. PHP versions

According to ionCube, its encoder supports PHP syntax up to 8.4, and files encoded for PHP 8.2–8.4 can run on up to PHP 8.5.

With Oxrion, one protected file runs on every supported PHP version — your customers can upgrade PHP without needing new files from you.

Ask: when my customers upgrade PHP, do I need to re-encode and re-ship?

4. Licensing, day to day

Issuing a license is the easy part. Running licensing as part of a business means keeping a record of every license, renewing them, and delivering them to customers.

In ionCube, licensing controls are part of the Pro and Cerberus editions, with Online Licensing as a paid add-on. In Oxrion, every paid plan includes the License option, and the free desktop app includes the whole workflow: sign per-host licenses offline with your own key, keep a searchable license history, renew in one click, email licenses through your own email account, and notify your own systems by webhook.

Ask: where will I keep track of who has which license, and how will customers receive it?

5. Getting your own source back

Encoded files are meant to be unreadable — including to you, if you lose your original source. Oxrion’s optional Recovery feature lets you restore the original source offline with your own key. We couldn’t find an equivalent described on ionCube’s pages.

Ask: what happens if I lose my source repository?

6. Where the loader is available

This is where ionCube has a real advantage: its loader is pre-installed at many popular web hosts. Every encoder needs its loader on the server, so if your customers are on shared hosting, the loader your hosting provider offers matters a lot.

The Oxrion loader is free and installs with one command on a VPS or dedicated server running Linux or Windows. On shared hosting, the host has to add it.

Ask: where do my customers host, and can they install a loader there?

Switching

There’s no converter between encoders: each has its own file format and loader. To switch, you protect your original source with Oxrion and install the free Oxrion loader on the servers that will run it. Files you already shipped with ionCube keep needing the ionCube loader, so most developers switch with their next release.
